下田の大杉

名    称：下田の大杉（町指定天然記念物）

所在地：立山町下田1

大きさ：幹の周囲（目の高さ）6.7m   樹高24m

   樹齢約400年の巨大な杉です。かつては、周囲の雑木の中でもひときわ目立ち、晴れた日には遠く富山湾上からも確認できました。近年、風雪により損傷した部分を除去したため、当時よりも樹高が低くなっています。

   下田集落では、村の草分けの頃の話として、人魚の肉を食べて不老長寿となった白比丘尼（しろびくに）の伝説が伝わっており、この大杉は、その白比丘尼が若狭の国（現在の福井県）へ去る時に植えたものと伝えられています。

   明治の初めには、常願寺橋を架けるために巨木供出の触れが出されましたが、村人が神木として伐採を拒んだため、供出を免れました。

A huge cedar of Misada is about 400 years old. In tha past, people could look at this cedar from above Toyama Bay on a sunny day.

In recent years, part of the tree was cut down because it was severely damaged by wind and snow. 

So, the height of this cedar is lower than it was back then.

In the Misada village at the time of development, there is a legend about Shirobikuni who ate mermaid flesh and became eternally young and long-lived.

It is said that this huge cedar was planted by Shirobikuni when she went to Wakasa（Fukui）.

At the beginning of the Meiji period, a proposal was made to donate this huge cedar to build the Joganji Bridge, but the donation was avoided because the villagers refused to cut down the huge cedar, considering it a sacred tree.
